In a parallel world, behind the tarpaulins and sideshows, we meet the Bells. A family that’s been carving a path across Australia for over a hundred years, from its beginnings in the outback boxing tents to the million dollar rides they haul on semi trailers, we enter a world that not many people have seen before.
15 year old Roy Bell is a fifth generation showkid, and is gearing up to take over the family business. As he operates one of the tallest traveling rides we learn about what it’s been like growing up in this world. As the next in line to take over, Roy talks about the pressures on him and what he expects to get out of his life.
His sister, 19 year old Elle, is at University studying business, and is uncertain of her own future in the show - knowing she wants to have a family one day, but being aware of how hard it is to find a partner in the same segregated industry. For Elle it could mean leaving the showgrounds for good, and it’s something she is preparing herself for. Their father, Elwin Bell Jnr, has been teaching his 5 kids the ways of the show since they were born, and along with his own father, Elwin Bell Snr, can see that some traditions are being left behind, and that peoples’ attitudes to carnivals are changing.
As we criss-cross Australia with the Bells and their entourage of trucks and trailers, we see a new perspective - an economical shift away from this classic form of entertainment, and the possible demise of the carnival.
